Although I was born and raised in Minnesota, I am not a big fan of winter. While I appreciate a White Christmas and the magical quality of the first snow of the season, once New Year’s has passed I’m ready to be done. If it were up to me, we’d be back to sunny summer days and eighty degree weather by now!
I also have a tendency to get tired of my winter clothes at this time of year. First of all, I have worn my beloved sweaters over and over again. Secondly, my boots are working overtime. I look into my closet for something to wear and do not feel inspired. This happens every year without fail. However, I have found that a little creativity can relieve my fashion boredom and get me excited about what’s in my closet again.
Here are some of my favorite ways to keep my winter wardrobe exciting:
1. Get creative with layering
A well-stocked winter wardrobe should include a lot of layers. However, we can have a tendency to stick with the same combinations. To mix things up, try wearing a shirt as a cardigan, a cardigan as a pullover, a dress as a skirt, add a belt, etc.
2. Take advantage of end-of-season sales
Retailers are getting rid of their winter inventory to make way for the upcoming season, so keep an eye out for clearance items and sales. Even just the addition of a new scarf or pair of boots can give you plenty of new outfit options. I also like using these end-of-season sales to stock up for next year! For example, if I know that I will be short on tights come next winter, it makes more sense to buy them now at a discount rather than wait until they are back in stock at full price next year.
3. Swap with a friend
My sisters and I love raiding each others’ closets, especially for special occasions. More options to choose from without spending any money? Yes please!
4. Incorporate your summery clothes
A light, summery dress or blouse can be transformed when paired with a chunky cardigan and boots. I especially love pretty floral patterns for winter.
And you? How are you keeping your winter wardrobe looking fresh these days?
