DIY Pearl Embellished Sweater

I love my knitwear. And maybe it’s just because I’m cold all the time (thank you, Minnesota winters and air conditioned summers), but it’s important to me to have a stylish and versatile collection of sweaters in my wardrobe – at all times and for all seasons!

Lately I’ve been going gaga over the pearl embellished trend, particularly the sweaters. So I reached into my closet and pulled out an old sweater, grabbed some of my jewelry-making supplies, and made one for myself! Here’s how you can DIY your own pearl embellished sweater:

YOU NEED

  • A sweater*
  • Glass or acrylic pearl beads (mine are from Michaels)
  • A small needle
  • Thread in a color that matches your sweater
  • Scissors

*NOTE: If your sweater is loose-knit or delicate, you may need to add an interfacing to the inside of the garment to support the weight of the beads.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Lay your sweater and your beads out on a flat surface and play with different arrangements to see what you like best. I like shopping around the web for inspiration when I do projects like these. I was inspired by this sweater because of the way the designer used the cables to determine the bead placement (not so inspired by that price tag, though).
  2. Once you’ve decided where you want everything to go, take a couple of pics with your phone for reference, just in case.
  3. Thread your needle with two lengths of thread (or one length folded in half). Tie a knot at the end.
  4. Insert needle from the inside of the sweater and bring it through to the outside, where you want your first bead to be. Make a tiny stitch and come back through to the outside of the sweater to make your knot more secure.
  5. Slip your first bead onto the needle and slide it along the thread. The needle should then go back into the sweater very close to where it came out to keep your design in place. Pull the thread tight to settle the bead into place, but not so tight that the fabric puckers.
  6. Do another stitch through your first bead  for added security, and then bring the needle through to the next location that needs a bead. (If your beads are going to be more scattered than clustered, you may want to start over with a new thread for each bead or cluster of beads.)
  7. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 until your design is complete. At the base of the last pearl, make a couple of tiny extra stitches to secure everything in place. Then take the thread through to the inside of the sweater and tie a knot. And voila!
